  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

He looks at me for a second before he shrugs and pulls his shirt to the side, revealing a symbol I vaguely recognize as something to do with the military. “I was a navy seal. I give you my word on my brothers that I’m not going to hurt you.”

Scowling, I shift on my feet. “I don’t know you. Your word means nothing.”

“Well, then, I guess it’s on you to take that risk or not,” he replies. He holds out his hand for me to shake and I eye it. “I’m Creed Montgomery.”

I have two options. One, I tell him to fuck off and make my own way onto the island and figure out how to survive. Or two, I take the hand he’s offering, team up with him, keep my eye out for trouble, and benefit from the survival training of a Navy Seal. The choice is relatively easy.

Shaking his hand roughly, I meet his ocean eyes and smile. “Billie Hirsh.”

We travel along the tree line for a while, studying the shoreline, but it isn’t long before we come across another man making a raft. It’s an easy solution, probably the first solution most think of, but this one must not have realized there are armed guards out in the water. I don’t know shit, but I know if you’re going to get a raft in the water, it’s probably best to time their patrol and try and get out quickly. Also, during the day, you’d be seen for miles I think if the day is as clear as it is today. Nighttime is probably the best time to go. Shit, I’m not even an outdoorsy girl and that seems like common sense to me.

But this man is quickly tying wood together into a raft large enough for him to float on. I have to admit, his raft is much better made than the last guy’s, as if he’s built something like this before. His appearance tells me he’s from somewhere else, maybe Polynesia? I’m not the greatest with my geography but I’d definitely guess Pacific Islander.

“What do you think his plan is?” I ask Creed, watching the man carefully, studying the expert way he uses palm leaves to tie the wood together.

“Get off the island.” Creed shrugs. “I’d say that’s all he’s really thinking.”

“I doubt it’s that easy. In fact, we know it’s not.”

Creed watches the man just as closely as I do, studying how he builds the raft. “Anyone who went through the trouble of getting us here isn’t going to make it easy to just float away.” He looks up at the sky. “Besides, it’s daytime. He needs to move at night. All these idiots try this during the day and it’s not going to work.”
