- ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Just as the shark opens its mouth, Row snaps out his fist and thumps it on the nose, scaring it away briefly. It shoots back into the darkness, disappearing and leaving me wondering just how many sharks are around us. I can only see those lit up by the beam but no doubt there are more circling in the darkness.
Despite Row’s offense, more and more sharks come up toward him, curious at the scent of blood despite his fist on the noses of those who get too close. I can tell he’s starting to panic, that he’s going to run out of what little air he’s able to get through the reed if he doesn’t stop. The guards still linger like actual idiots, being too thorough. Fuck, we thought they’d move on quicker than this.
My body tenses.
The small sharks around us suddenly scatter and disappear into the darkness despite none of us doing anything. The beam still dances over the water, studying each piece of driftwood, passing time. The patrol boat sits silent, the guards on top talking back and forth in a language I don’t understand. As the light moves around us, I catch sight of the shadow just out of view, too much in the darkness to make out clearly. But I can see the size. It’s larger than any of the others, and suddenly, it makes sense why the smaller sharks disappeared.
Pure panic runs through my veins. My blood turns to ice. My entire body begins to shake.
Go away! Go away! Go away!
FORTY-FOUR
I track the shadow through the water, watching as it circles our group and the boat still hovering too close. All the while, the spotlight moves around us, highlighting it at small intervals as the larger shark draws closer, pulled in by the scent of blood. The small sharks stay in the distance, desperate to keep away from the larger predator. When the light dances off its side and I get a better look at it, I start to breathe a little faster, my lungs screaming at me.
Grey and white. It’s sides are grey cut by white.
I know what that means. The bisecting line down its side separating the two colors are from a nightmare. Some part of me knows it’s just an animal and we stepped into its turf, but another part, the child in me, is reliving the nightmares I had as a child after watching Jaws.
I was always scared the great white was going to get me. And here he is, stalking us like Prey.
The shark moves around, giving me a good idea of its size as it lazily circles us, curious, hungry. He’s gotta be at least twelve feet, maybe more. Not the largest Great White, but sizable enough to kill and cause damage.
Fuck.
