  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

Sighing, I pick up some old rotting rope and hold it up to inspect it. When I decide it’s too far gone to use, I toss it away. “I suppose my lifestyle isn’t really ideal for a woman.” I study the man who so clearly has ties to something far more dangerous than the rest of us. “What about you? You going to pursue her after this?”

Jiro pauses in bending down to grab another board. It’s a split second before he continues as if it never happens. “I live in Japan.”

“And? Women like Japan. Nothing wrong with that.”

He glances at me. “I live a dangerous lifestyle. It would be too close to her experiences here. My life is too bloody.”

“Too bloody, huh?” I muse. “She didn’t hesitate to kill that fucker who took her. She might fit right in.”

“A rabbit using her teeth to survive is no predator,” he replies. “She’s only fighting to live. She shouldn’t have to.”

“Yeah,” I sigh. “It’s been an intense nine days. She’d never be interested in us outside the island, and she deserves better.”

“She does,” he agrees.

We fall into silence for a moment, looking out at the clear blue waters. “She’s something, though, isn’t she?” I say, wishing things were different, that she looks at me the way she does because she actually cares, not because we’re a family out of necessity.

“Yes,” Jiro agrees, and there’s a sadness in his tone I hear and recognize. “She is.”

Seems like we’re both a couple of lovesick fools. If only we can get off this fucking island in one piece, maybe I’ll ask her what she thinks. Maybe I’ll ask her on a date and then pick something wildly different to ruffle her feathers.

We have to survive first. I have to keep her alive first.

If not, then it’s all for nothing, and I’m not sure I’m prepared to have my heart ripped out quite so brutally as that.

THIRTY-EIGHT

CREED

Billie is a professional. That much I know. Despite wearing boots and cargo pants, she immediately begins to move in a way that has me as equally mesmerized as the Hounds in front of us.

“Aren’t you going to play some music?” she asks of the main Hound, Fitzpatrick.

My eyes go to him and watch as he pulls out an iPod that looks like it’s at least a decade old. Apparently, no cellphones are allowed here. Makes sense. Wouldn’t want some Prey calling for help, even if the cell signal likely doesn’t reach this far. He clicks through the songs as Billie kicks off her boots and waits.

When the sounds of rock music come on, I raise my brows in surprise. At least the fucker has good taste.
