  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I blink at him. “Now I know why they say to eat the rich.”

“Yeah,” he says, despite the fact he’s included in that sentiment. “Come on. We still have a long ways to go before we reach the East Tower. Better to leave than stand around talking.”

As we pass, Creed slams his foot down on the camera, shattering it just in case it was still working.

Fuck the bastards who dare to watch us. I hope they’re getting a show, because when I find them, I’m going to make sure they remember me.

Even if it’s because I’m covered in their blood.

TWENTY-FIVE

“I’m so tired of this jungle,” I grunt. “I’d kill for a Starbucks and some fuzzy socks right about now.”

Achilles glances back at me. “Out of everything, that’s what you miss?”

“Don’t rain on my parade just because you like living without comforts,” I growl. “Keep your survivalist bullshit to yourself.”

He shrugs. “I can admit I miss pizza.”

“Oh my god, yes. There’s this little pizza shop down the street from me—”

“I make mine myself,” he interrupts.

I scowl. “Of course you do. I bet even Bear Grylls eats at pizza shops every now and then.”

Achilles snorts. “That fraud? Yeah, I bet he does.”

“You take that back!” I gasp, pointing my finger at him. “Bear is a saint teaching normal people how to survive in case their plane crashes.”

“As if you’re going to survive a plane crash,” Achilles says with a roll of his eyes.

“Enough,” Jiro grunts. “You’re making me want pizza.”

I laugh at the soft bickering we’ve all grown accustomed to. We’ve gotten closer and it’s strange to think like that. After all, it’s only been a few days, but here I am feeling closer to these four guys than I have almost anyone in my life. Even Row is growing on me, though I think it’s mostly because I sense something just beneath his skin that he’s hiding. He’s not as soft as Achilles thinks. The rich have to be cutthroat in order to survive. Thinking Row hasn’t adapted such a mentality would be a mistake. I like men with layers and damn if I don’t want to peel those layers back and look deeper inside him.

I’m about to keep talking, maybe bring up other comforts I miss, but before I can get the words out, a bullet comes out of nowhere, misses my head by an inch, and hits the tree behind me. I don’t even hear the bang from the gun. Bark explodes from the impact as I duck and cover my head, the others doing the same.
