Achilles nods at my answer. “There are only a handful of places that lack snakes. Ireland, but this place is too warm for that. New Zealand, but this island is too small. I doubt this could be an outlying island of New Zealand, at all. It’s not cold so that rules out Greenland or Antarctica as well. There are islands that lack snakes because of their isolation but I don’t know every individual land mass. My bet is an island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, a lesser known one. That doesn’t really explain the lack of larger predators, though.”
“We ate coconut crabs, too,” Jiro points out, further proving that we’re somewhere in the Pacific. Or at least, I can tell that’s why he adds it.
“Damn,” Achilles groans. “And you didn’t save me any? Coconut crab is the best. Drizzle that shit with lemon and go to town.” He moans. “Fuck. I’m going to hit up a seafood restaurant when we get back to civilization. Thanks for making me crave that shit.”
Another thirty minutes of hiking up a steep incline and we reach the grey concrete building we’ve been heading toward, or at least the fencing around it. Barb wire curls along the top but because of the age of the fence, it no longer curls consistently and there are gaps in the fence easily able to be slipped through. It’s rusty and clearly older than I am but that’s not what draws my attention. My eyes catch on the sign hanging on the fence, repeated about every ten feet, the yellow warning loud and clear.
“Uh, guys,” I say, staring at it carefully. “Do we need to worry about this?”
Creed comes to stand next to me and swears. “Well, fuck if that’s good.”
Jiro follows and his eyes widen. “Well, this may have just gotten much more dangerous than we planned.”
But all I can do is look at the radioactive symbol etched into the peeling paint, the words missing much of the black paint but still legible.
“Caution, grave danger. Very high radiation area. Personnel monitoring required,” I read out loud. I glance up at the others. “Well, fuck.”
EIGHTEEN
All along the fence, small yellow triangles with red radiation symbols and black words stare out at us, teasing us, threatening us with an enemy we can’t exactly fight.
“Are we going to die?” I rasp, not exactly sure how radiation poisoning works past it being bad. I know you die from it and that it isn’t pleasant, but I don’t know the mechanics.
Creed frowns. “We would be feeling symptoms by now if the island was radioactive. Fever, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, skin rashes, seizures. That all would be pretty common. I feel fine. Anyone else?”
