- ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“Don’t worry,” Row says, his voice cold and so unlike him. The mask he’d been trained to wear. “We’ll make you dance too, big guy. But only if you ask nicely.”
My blood chills at that tone, at how easy it is for Row to turn it on. Like a light switch, he’s suddenly the Hound rather than part of our group. And that makes him more terrifying than before. He was never the mouse.
Row has always been a predator.
“Don’t make me do this,” I beg, playing the meek woman, wrapping my arms around myself. “I don’t want to.”
Creed twitches at my words, but I can tell, when I pretend, he realizes it’s a game. He’s putting on a show. “I’m going to fucking gut you!”
Row moves over with the other Hounds and smiles coldly at me. There’s the Hound. This is the one we haven’t seen, the Row that he hasn’t shown. He gestures for me to take the floor.
“So dance, little rabbit,” he orders, and the others hoot and whistle. “And make it good, or else I’ll have to bend you over my knee and let the others fuck you.”
My heart drops.
THIRTY-SEVEN
ACHILLES
Jiro moves silently beside me, stooping down to pick up pieces of driftwood from the jagged rocks close to the water. I keep watch for patrol boats so we can duck down when we need to. They never come at the exact same time, as if their random times are calculated throughout the day. If I had time to sit and watch them for an entire day, I’d see a pattern I’m sure, but we don’t have time for that.
“Boat,” I say when the first sounds of a motor reach my ear.
We both duck at the same time, tucking ourselves into the rocks so they can’t see us. Once they’re passed, we stand up again. It’s like a game of red light, green light and I’ll be honest. I always hated that game.
“You think Billie would ever be into me in the real world?” I ask suddenly as Jiro hands me more wood to toss up to the top.
He pauses, those intelligent eyes staring at me closely. “Why do you ask?”
“I don’t know. I have this overwhelming feeling that she wouldn’t choose any of us in real life. Well, except for Creed. No woman would turn away Mister Navy Seal.”
Jiro snorts. “You travel a lot, rarely sleep in a house, and backpack across the world. You think a woman like her would want to live like we currently are all the time?” He raises his brow in question.
I scowl. “It’s not the same.”
“So she doesn’t have anyone actively hunting her. Besides that, still the same for a woman. The danger is always there.”
