- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
“Do you want this back?” I ask, pointing to the coat. It’ll make me uncomfortable to reveal my dance outfit to all these men, but he was kind enough to lend it to me in the first place, so I’ll return it if he insists.
He shakes his head in answer and looks around at the others, eyeing those clearly watching me hungrily. As far as situations go, this is one I never thought I would be in. The rest of the men all look like a collection of tough bastards. A mix of military, criminals—no shit, there’s a few guys with tear drop tattoos—and men who look strong and capable. They’re all looking around, taking things in, eying each other like threats. A few startle when they see me, clearly confused. Join the club, fuckers, I think. I have no idea what I’m doing here either.
“Thank you,” I whisper, pulling the jacket together and buttoning the front. At least it covers my ass.
He nods to acknowledge my gratitude and then moves over to the closest crate, gesturing for me to come over. He’s just peeling the top off of it when loudspeakers crackle to life from somewhere I can’t place. The sound comes from everywhere, all around us, and yet nowhere at all. It’s meant to disorientate.
There’s static for a few seconds before a masculine voice booms over the area, demanding everyone listens.
“Welcome,” he says, his voice filled with amusement. “To Prey Island.”

Prey island?
I look around, taking in the tropical foliage and the humid air again. An island? Where at? How far am I from Colorado?
“I’m sure you’re all wondering why you’re here,” the voice continues even as the Asian man who I should really ask his name digs through the crate and starts pulling out weapons and duffle bags. He hands one of the duffle bags to me before passing things over to fill it.
“No shit,” I grumble at the mystery voice, annoyed when I’m being handed more and more items.
“You have all been chosen for various reasons, because of your accomplishments, your reputations, or pure spite, but there’s only one reason that matters.” I can’t tell where the voice is coming from, if it’s coming from one speaker or many, but I unzip the duffle bag and take in the clothing and boots shoved inside before I drop in the items my friend is giving me. Rope, a pocketknife, a compass. Good, at least I can cover up with the clothes. Not sure what I’m going to do with the rest of it. “You will all be hunted like the Prey you are.”
