- ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I don’t really react, mostly because there are four others who are quicker than me, but I’m surprised when it’s Row who raises his rifle and fires a single bullet before the man can come any closer. It hits the man dead center on his chest and he goes down hard, sliding along the forest floor for a moment before stilling. He brought a machete to a gun fight, which, in a moment of clarity, makes me think he’d intended on getting shot. It’s a much quicker way to go out than to bid your time on this island I guess. I dread reaching that point, the loss of hope. The longer we’re on the island, the less chance we have to get off I feel, but I’m not ready to give up just yet.
While everyone is staring at the new body on the ground, I look at Row and find him panting hard, panic clear in his eyes. He doesn’t gag this time, but I can tell he wants to. He swallows over and over again, his gun still trained where the Prey had been.
“Would you look at that?” Achilles says with a grin. “Both of our babies grew up today.”
I flip him the bird, ready to punch him in his trash mouth, but Jiro interrupts the moment by clapping Row on the back.
“Welcome to the Hound Society, Row,” he says.
It suddenly all makes sense to me. The Hounds have to kill a single Prey to get in and Row just did that. It was in self-defense and panic, but it still counts I assume. By the way he’s staring down at the body with tragedy in his eyes, I’m guessing that’s the case.
The others shoulder their weapons and start moving out, but Row still stands there so I come up and take his hand. I know he hadn’t wanted to be a part of this. If I hadn’t known, this reaction would have told me everything I needed to know.
We have a true Hound in our midst now. I wonder how he feels being surrounded by Prey.
“Come on,” I whisper, and the both of us stumble after the others, knowing we need to keep fighting.
The rabbit locks fingers with the Hound and leads him deeper into Hell.
TWENTY-SIX
“We should reach the East Tower by the end of tomorrow,” Achilles says. “That is if Row’s map is right.”
“It’s right,” Row says softly, his eyes away from the rest of us. Clearly, he’s dealing with his own shit right now, so I direct the attention away from him, giving him time to grieve his loss of control on his life.
