  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

The movement comes again above us, and I see him, briefly, but he’s telling me he’s there without giving away his position. I glance back at the man holding me and grin. “I doubt your cock is long enough to make me scream but go on and think you can fuck me properly.”

His face twists in anger, bringing his full attention on me.

Which means he’s not paying attention anywhere else. Which means he doesn’t see the movement right above him.

It means he has no idea what happens when Jiro drops out of the trees right on top of him, the knife in his skull before he can even slap me for insulting his pencil dick.

“Run, Billie!” Jiro commands the moment I’m free.

I don’t hesitate. I don’t suddenly think I can fight off the other seven men. I’m not stupid. I’m a liability in a gun fight and I know that, so I do as Jiro commands.

I take off into the trees, running, my arms pumping.

I don’t look back, not even when the guns go off.

Not even when I hear the Hounds chasing me.

TWENTY-EIGHT

My breath saws in and out of my lungs as I run. The howl behind me, one of the Hounds thinking he’s funny, makes my blood freeze in my veins, but I don’t stop. I can’t stop, not if I want to live. The assholes don’t deserve the honor of killing me here. I won’t be taken down. I won’t be stopped. Jiro said to run so I run, until my legs start to shake, until my lungs start to burn.

This isn’t how I imagined my life, but this is what I have to do now. This is what it’s come to, and I will not be beaten down by these assholes. I won’t go down without a fight.

My legs burn from a week of too little sleep and so much cardio. My chest burns with the rough breaths I force out, coaching my breathing so I can keep going. I won’t be killed because I can’t run. I refuse.

I don’t know where the others are. I glance over my shoulder once, but I don’t see them. All I see is the group of Hounds chasing after me. Whatever happened back there with the others, there has to be at least four of the motherfuckers behind me. As if I’m the target. As if I’m the threat.

I know exactly what they plan to do if they catch me. I can’t let that happen.
