- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
Hesitantly, with my nerves still on fire and afraid, I dip my fingers quickly in the water and withdraw, giving me a tiny push toward Predator Point. I’m terrified I’ll lose them if I linger too long, if there just happens to be a shark there. When they come away in one piece, I kneel on my knees on the raft and use both arms to push me, making sure each dip of my hand is worth the risk by giving a big push. The others do the same, keeping us together as we move.
As a unit, we finish the last quarter mile in silence to Predator Point.
I don’t know about them, but my silence is because we’d faced off against a true predator and came out the victor. Despite that, I know with certainty, if we face him again, we may not be so lucky.
The laws of nature are ever changing.
Sometimes, we’re the predators.
Sometimes, we’re the Prey. . .
FORTY-FIVE
Predator Point is nestled in the lap of luxury out here in the middle of fucking nowhere and it pisses me off. They drop us on an island with nothing but remains of humanity’s mistakes, and yet here, they get to enjoy their drunken debauchery like kings and queens. Even the rocks along the shore are smooth, making it easy to climb up if not for the slippery algae. Apparently, they didn’t ever think Prey would make it this far. There was no need for the jagged rocks.
More patrol boats pass in the distance behind us as we clamor ashore and hide in the dips between the rocks, our weapons cradled against our stomachs. There’s a chance that even after we shake the water out and try our best to dry them that the guns won’t work, but my knife will. At least there’s that.
We wait until the patrol boat passes before we move again, climbing up the small cliff and peeking over the edge. We look up through stone pillars decorating a balustrade to see light spilling from inside the compound. We can’t climb up right here, not with all that light highlighting the area, but through the light, we can see the party going on inside. Women and men dressed in their finest, dripping jewels worth more than some people’s homes, laugh and drink despite the literal death games they’re hosting just a half mile away. The people who’ve died don’t seem to weigh on them at all as they go about their life and their merriment. Disgusting.
