- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
“The shelter refused to let me adopt a kitten because I’m not home twenty hours a day, so no pets. Just me and Keanu Leaves,” I answer with a shrug. He snorts at the name for my plant but when I shoot a wink, I ask. “How about you? No lady friend?”
Jiro shakes his head. “No.” After a moment of thinking about it, he says, “They others don’t either.”
“How do you know that?”
The smile that pulls at his lips makes him look impossibly more handsome than he already does. It makes my lady bits flutter and my heart skip a beat like some silly romcom heroine.
“Trust me,” he gives as reason. “I just know.”
And it filters through my mind about why he felt the need to tell me that. If he knows that I’ve been working my way on half of them already and planning for more. And if he does know that, he doesn’t seem the least bit concerned about it.
Curious.
We find the others thirty minutes later, none of them worse for wear. Creed looks a little strung out at having been split up, but Achilles and Row are calm. We take a moment to discuss what happened before we head out again, continuing on our destination.
As if the five of us didn’t nearly just die for the thousandth time in a handful of days.
THIRTY
The East Tower comes into view as the sun starts to set in the sky. It’s strange how quickly the time passes when you’re trekking through a jungle and trying not to get killed. Even though we knew we were due to reach the tower, it’s still almost a surprise when it rises up out of the jungle like our savior.
It spears high into the air, appearing more like a fire watch tower than a telephone tower. Thankfully for us, that means it’s an easy climb up to a platform and a small room big enough for most of us to sleep. On top of the tower are large antennas big enough to climb. The first thing we do is try to use the ancient equipment inside, but I’m not surprised when they don’t work. The Hound Society wouldn’t want anyone calling for help.
At the top of the platform, the East Tower is a great vantage point for the entire island. While we can’t see all the way to the other end, we can see a vast majority of the jungle we spent days walking through. Seven days now? Eight? Creed would know but I’m too tired to ask. The long run through the jungle is starting to catch up to me.
