  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

We split and head back to our own homes. I spend the next couple of days sitting in the dark eating takeout deliveries and ice cream and watching soap operas that have nothing to do with islands or death games. I cry a few times, have panic attacks at the smallest sound, and when I hear someone shouting outside my apartment one day, I literally hide until the yelling stops before I realize what I’m doing.

On the third day of this, my new phone beeps with a notification from my bank. When I check it, I see too many zeroes in the bank account.

Fifty Million dollars.

Because I conquered Prey Island. I played the game against my will and won.

With a scowl, I throw the phone across the room and keep eating the chocolate chip ice cream in my lap. As I eat, I can’t help but see the red stains on my hands, no longer there physically, but never going away. It drips and corrupts, covers me completely.

But my ice cream tastes normal despite the stains, so I eat it.

Not even death could stop me from this chocolate chip goodness.

FIFTY-FIVE

Four Months Later

The dirty money had sat in my account for a month, untouched, until I realized it was the perfect opportunity to start my own venture. I’d funneled it into a business account, started an LLC, and opened my own club right in the heart of Denver, Colorado. I made a name for my self quickly, but the last four months have been hell. I’m sure I have PTSD, but I can’t go to a therapist for it, so I work on it on my own.

Tonight, my club is packed just like it is every night. It’s filled to the brim with men who come to see the ladies on the stage. Holly stands proudly up there, dressed in sexy lingerie. She winks at Mark where he stands cheering her on in the crowd, a sparkly diamond ring on her finger.

My predators. My Hounds.

It’s probably a little on the nose to have called my club ‘Prey Island’, but some small part of me likes playing with fire. I’d taken the logo I’d seen for the Hound Society and modified it. The logo of my club is a Hound biting the rabbit, but the rabbit is biting the Hound back. Beneath it, instead of their motto, is written my own.

Invictus maneo.

I remain unvanquished.
