- ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I narrow my eyes at him, and he shuts up. “Well, I went to college, got a couple of degrees, but realized I didn’t really want to use any of them for just anything. I made too good of money at the club to quit but I never really wanted a boss breathing down my neck. Sam at the club was bad enough.” I hold a branch out of the way for Jiro and he looks at me funny like I’m doing something weird. “I always had a dream of opening my own club, a safe place that brings in all kinds, that caters to both men and woman. I think it would be—”
Jiro holds up his hand, stopping me mid-sentence. We all go on high alert the second he does, waiting, watching. When he points to a tree and we see the camera there, we all relax.
“Asshole. I thought we were under attack,” Row grumbles.
“We’re being watched,” Jiro replies, glancing at him.
“Well, yeah. I told you they watch you. You’d be surprised how many cameras there are on the island.”
Achilles’ face twists and he’s moving to the base of the tree a moment later. It’s at least fifty feet off the ground but he starts to scale the tree like it’s nothing, climbing quick until he reaches the camera and rips it off. He drops back to the ground and holds the camera up. I don’t know what kind of training made him able to climb a tree like that but I fucking need it.
“Bastards. What is even the point of this?” he snarls at Row as he throws it at his feet.
Row doesn’t even seem perturbed and I’m starting to wonder if he’s not weak so much as cold in a different way. I have to keep reminding myself he’s survived on the island just as long as we have. “It’s a sport,” he shrugs. “Entertainment.” He glances at me. “To get into the Hound Society, you have to hunt and kill Prey. You are all the stars. At Predator Point. . .” He pulls out his hand drawn map and points to an island off the coast of the one we’re on, close by. “They all watch you from here. They throw a huge party that lasts until the last Prey dies.”
My face twists in anger. “One is supposed to win the money,” I point out.
But when Row meets my eyes, I know he’s about to wipe that tiny hope away completely. “In the history of Prey Island, only one Prey has made it off with the prize money. A survivor is a liability.” He shakes his head and tucks the map away. “Never accept promises from the people who kidnap you, and especially not the rich. They’ll fuck you over every time.”
