- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
We walk for another couple of hours mostly in silence, keeping quiet in case there are others around. The temptation to talk to pass the time is strong for me, but I also don’t want to be the reason we get shot at, or worse, killed. So, I keep to the middle and help move branches out of the way for Jiro behind me as we move, following their lead since all three of the men with me seem to know what they’re doing.
Seriously, when I get back home, I’m taking some survival training. There’s gotta be something I can sign up for, right? Maybe the local doomsday prepper will take pity on me.
I’m so lost in my head space, thinking about the things I should probably learn about in case I find myself in this situation again, that it takes me an extra second to realize everyone else has stopped and Creed has his hand up. That second is what costs us.
I trip over Achilles where he stops in front of me and immediately start swinging my arms to catch myself, making far too much noise as I grab at whatever is closest to me. The branch I grab onto isn’t strong enough to hold my weight, so it snaps, and I go down with a crash. I don’t think anyone could have made as much noise as I just did. While I’m struggling to get up out of the brush, the others pull their weapons and tense. When I manage to get up again and drag myself back to my feet, I realize we’re surrounded by four men, each wearing tactical gear that looks like it costs thousands and each armed to the teeth. Seriously, they’re covered in weapons.
Fuck.
Clearly, we’ve stumbled onto more Hounds and my dumbass just made it easier for them to find us.
“Well, how about that?” one of the men says in a thick European accent. I don’t recognize where it comes from, and a few of the words sound like they’re from completely different origins, so I give up pretty quickly trying to place him on a geography map. I need to be more worried about the rifle he has trained on Creed. “Not only did we find a nice little cluster of Prey, but we found the stripper. Lucky us.”
I scowl at the man but keep silent, knowing this situation is too dangerous to taunt. We’re even numbered, but I don’t have my weapon trained on them. If I reach for it, they’re going to shoot. Which leaves me as the weaker link just like Achilles said. It really pisses me off that he’s right.
