  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

I’m starting to lose track of days. The only reason I know it’s been four days is because Creed points it out like an announcement each time he wakes up in the morning. Secretly, I think he understands that I can’t keep track with the stress of the situation. There’s probably some training they get to mark days. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Navy Seals know what they’re doing when it comes to marking the days stuck in a location. But little ole me? Nothing. I look at the sky and think to myself, yep, it's daytime. That’s about it.

The plan is to leave the testing compound and head south at a diagonal pattern again, hit the other side of the island until we come into contact with the coast. As of right now, the widest point of the island, according to Achilles, is probably about six miles wide. I don’t know how Achilles came to that conclusion but when Creed agreed, I have to assume there’s some weird mind formula that people who’ve had survival training know.

It might as well be magic to me.

The four of us move from the compound cautiously, making sure that we’re not ambushed the moment we leave. I end up taking some of the notebooks and shoving them in my bag, if only so I can point to the location when we get off this island and I report it. I’d also taken the small, laminated map that marks the island. Secretly, I think the information inside of the journals are probably as important as the map. Jiro ends up taking the radiation meter so I assume I can take stuff, too. Not like anyone is coming back for it.

Fairly quickly, as we begin our trek, we have to pause when the sounds of movement reach our ears. I’m expecting a fight, but when another lone Prey appears and doesn’t raise a weapon, we quietly pass each other by. Only when he disappears do I lower my pistol I’d actually drawn from my pocket on instinct. Apparently, I’ve started to adapt.

I glance at the others in confusion when we’re not attacked.

“Perhaps, they’re realizing we’re not the danger here and that the money isn’t worth it,” Achilles says with a shrug.

“The money will always be worth it to someone,” Creed answers. “That kind of money is life changing.”

And yet here the four of us are, not caring about the money. So apparently, it’s a possibility. I still have to agree with Creed more though. There’s not a lot of people who wouldn’t kill for the money being given out and the rich use that fact to their advantage. It keeps normal people like us in the daily grind.
