- ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“1947,” I read out loud. “Shit. So after World War Two? This is getting more fucked up by the minute.”
Creed flips through a book on one of the tables, the thick dust covering it stirring up with each page flip. “I think I can answer where we are,” he says and gestures for us all to come closer. When I lean over his shoulder, he points to a map with a star on it. “We’re in the Marshall Islands”
Achilles studies the clearly English notes, reading deeper. “Fucking hell. This place was used for actual nuclear testing. No wonder the wildlife hasn’t come back as strong yet. That’s why there aren’t any stronger predators.”
Granted, the large predators on the island are people now but I don’t point that out. It doesn’t seem like the time.
Scratching his head, Creed flips more pages, trying to find as much information as possible. “As far as I know, the Bikini Atoll is still uninhabitable after using it for the same things as whatever this island is. I’ve never heard of a second island being used but it makes sense. We fucked over the people of Bikini Atoll real good. I suspect this island was a similar situation.”
“Yes, well,” Jiro mumbles as if he has firsthand knowledge of that fact. “The US government is great at that.”
He straightens and starts walking around the room. My eyes follow him as he picks up a small old-looking machine and flips a switch. It comes to life, the orange light on the screen flaring brightly before calming down. A loud sound screeches from it, the needle jumping, before it settles back down and the noise stops.
“Geiger meter,” he gives as an answer to my curiosity. “It measures radiation levels. It’s not high here.”
“So . . . extensive cleanup?” Achilles asks while looking around.
“There may still be unsafe areas,” Jiro answers as he tucks the meter into his bag. “I’ll keep this with me.”
“The water?” Creed asks suddenly, his eyes on the others.
“If we’re all meant to die, what use is there in the water being cleaned?” Achilles’ face hardens at the realization. The island may be okay, but the water could still be polluted with radiation.
“Yes, but the hunters have to drink it, too,” I point out. “They’re on the island as long as we are, and they can only carry so much water.”
Jiro breathes a sigh of relief. “Yes, that makes sense. We should be safe.”
