  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

Bullets rain around us, missing us by mere inches sometimes. One bounces off the concrete by my foot and I can feel the bits of stone that hit my toes, that dig into them and make me grit my teeth at the pain. Creed turns to fire over his shoulder again after changing out the clip, his eyes hard on his target as he fires a gun that threatens to lock up at any moment. I glance at him just as the bullet slams into his arm, a bit of blood splattering out. He curses the same time as I make a choked, panicked sound.

“Keep going!” Creed growls as he tucks his gun against his side, cradles his arm, and keeps running. Blood drips from the wound down his jacket, red against the black.

“Your arm—”

“I’ve had worse,” he grunts. “Don’t you dare stop. I’m fine.”

The smaller yacht appears around halfway down the port. It’s the first one that doesn’t look like a monster, the only one that isn’t some horrible waste of money. It’s small and maneuverable at least, but even it’s still a decent size. It looks like it’ll have at least a couple of bedrooms. This Hound must not be as well-established as many of the others.

“There!” I say, pointing at the smaller vessel.

As a unit, we all aim for it, trying our hardest to not get shot. Every now and then I duck, a bullet flying over my head. They’re shooting to kill but clearly, they’re not as good of shots as Creed is while running.

We practically leap aboard before splitting to go about our duties we’d already agreed upon. Jiro points his gun at the workers on board who were busy eating a modest meal.

“Get off!” he growls.

Afraid, the three crew members, including a captain, jump off the ship and onto the port. The poor captain takes a bullet to the chest when he gets in the way of the guards and goes down, but I can’t find enough energy to care if he deserved it not. We’re doing what we have to. We need to get off this island or we’re going to die just like him.

Jiro rushes to the captain’s wheel, going over the system, flipping switches until the engines start to rumble to life. He’s the only one who’s driven a large boat before, so it’ll be up to him to steer us out of danger.
