Creed and Row take up positions on the back of the boat and fire at the guards spilling forward, holding them off. Even with a bullet wound in his arm, Creed holds his gun steady with his left arm, firing while bracing the rifle against his shoulder. It reminds me again of what he is, of what he’s probably already experienced in his life. I’d seen a few scars on his body. He’s probably been shot before. An arm wound isn’t going to slow him down, clearly.
Achilles goes to work on the tethers, fewer than the big boats but still far too many.
I follow Jiro up to the captain’s spot and move around at his instruction.
“Press the red button,” he commands.
On the system, there are at least three red buttons. “Which one?” I growl.
“The one on the right!”
I slam my fist against it.
“Yellow switch!”
I do as he says, trying to focus despite the gunshots going off right outside, despite the guards getting closer, using themselves as cannon fodder.
The yacht rumbles fully to life as Jiro presses button after button, firing it up, getting it ready to go.
He slams open the window. “Tethers?”
“Good to go!” Achilles shouts back.
Jiro pulls a lever back and the engines rumble louder, beginning to pull back. Then he increases the speed because we don’t have time to waste. We need to get away from the bullets pinging off the ship.
None of us are braced for it. Achilles may have removed some tethers, but he must have missed one. The yacht jerks brutally, throwing me off my feet to slam against the back wall. I see Achilles go flying, barely being missed by the taunt rope before the bumper it was attached to tears away and pulls into the ocean after us.
Jiro, wasting no time, guns it again as I climb to my feet, wincing at what will be bruises later.
A man appears on the port, running after the yacht despite it pulling away and the bullets flying around. He’s wearing an expensive suit but not nearly as expensive looking as a lot of the other Hounds.
“Stop!” he shouts. “That’s my ship!”
Creed laughs at the man’s command and aims his rifle at him, firing once and taking out his kneecap. The Hound goes down, slamming into the decking with a shrill scream. I almost wish I had it on camera to watch over and over again. It was that satisfying.
Row snorts. “That guy was a major asshole.”
