- ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jiro shoots ahead of us and barrels out the door that appears, opening it just before we hear large locks engage. Large metal channels burst from the edge of the door, showing the locking mechanism we would have never been able to break had Jiro not got to it first and held it open.
We slam from the doorway and into the open air. Creed still fires his weapon, scattering people in our wake. We’re being pursued by a large group of guards, too many sporting guns that are clean and ready. I pull my own gun from where I’d tied it on my thigh. Luckily, it hadn’t slipped free with the running or the quickie earlier, but when I point it behind me and pull the trigger, nothing happens. The trigger won’t move.
“Fuck! My gun’s waterlogged. Trigger is frozen,” I pant.
When the guards burst through the door behind us, I throw the gun at them since it’s useless now. I’m satisfied by the loud thunk it makes when it bounces off a foolish Hound’s head that gets caught up in the running. Fucking shame. I liked that pistol.
The port in front of us opens up and reveals yacht after yacht, expensive machines that cost more than most people make their entire lifetimes. Most of them are massive things we’ll never be able to get out to sea in time with so many guards following us. There are only five of us and only Jiro knows how to captain a boat so we’re at a severe disadvantage.
At least we don’t have to figure out how to fly a plane. A ship seems like the better option.
Jiro pulls out his own gun and fires over his shoulder just like Creed does. Some of the guards go down but there’s a shitload of them coming after us now. We won’t have much time to get off the yacht away from the island. Even less time if the guards in the ocean come after us. Because the Hounds are mostly inside now, the guards start firing.
A bullet whizzes past my head, the sound of it making me duck and grimace. Achilles, where he runs in front of me, isn’t as lucky. It slices through the arm of his jacket, and he hisses through his teeth but doesn’t slow down. A graze hopefully. As far as wounds go, it’s not that bad. No worse than the cut Achilles got from the knife on the island.
