- ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“They party until the hunt is over,” Row whispers. He grimaces every now and then at the bite on his leg, but Achilles rewraps it with a dry bandage, stopping the dripping of blood at least. He’ll need medical attention once we’re able to get away from here. “When someone dies, the Grand Master gives out gifts to everyone.”
“The Grand Master?” I repeat. I’d heard him mention it before but hadn’t thought to ask until now.
Row nods. “He’s the head of the Hound Society.”
Jiro frowns. “Who is he?”
“No one knows. When the Grand Master is chosen, it’s kept a secret. Each Grand Master chooses his successor but in silence. There’s no pomp and circumstance. It’s not announced. He’s just introduced as the Grand Master.”
“Always a man?” I ask, narrowing my eyes.
Row hesitates but I know the answer before he speaks. “Yes.”
“What a surprise,” I say sarcastically. “Enough about that. We need to find some clothes.”
Creed runs a hand through his hair. “We’re going to have to find one of these assholes that’ll fit me.” He looks at the party. “Somehow, I think that’s going to be difficult.”
“There are more than just party goers. There are waiters, butlers, and even consorts,” Row murmurs. “You’ll find something.”
“Consorts?” I ask, frowning.
“Prostitution isn’t illegal everywhere, but it definitely isn’t here. They’re paid well for their time as long as they don’t speak about this place,” Row offers.
“Oh well, as long as they’re making that bread, I guess.” I duck down when the doors open and a couple stumbles out, clearly drunk and full of laughter. We watch as they giggle and move over to the shrubs that offer privacy to the left of us.
I move along the edge, gesturing for the others to follow as if they’re not already doing so. These two are clearly so drunk, they’ll never see us coming. That’s take care of two outfits, at least.
“Come on, Greg,” the woman whines. “You promised me a diamond choker bigger than Monica’s and you still haven’t given one to me.”
The man I suspect is Greg sighs so dramatically, I wonder if he’s an actor. “Lila, how on earth do I purchase a necklace here? We must wait until we’re on land again.”
Both of them are slurring their words so heavily, it’s almost difficult to make out what they’re saying.
“But then she won’t see it,” Lila whines. “What good are you if you don’t spend your father’s money on me?”
I roll my eyes at their conversation, absolutely disgusted. This is what they talk about? This is what they care about when innocent people are being slaughtered on Prey Island?
