- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
With a violence I don’t know I have in me, I burst out of the water and hoist myself on top of the raft, faster than I thought possible. I pull my legs completely on, all limbs out of the water, as I watch the others do the same. Just as I pull my foot from the water, something glances off that I accidentally kick but I don’t feel any teeth, so I consider it a win.
Panic claws at my throat as I watch the others emerge and pull themselves from the water. The rafts aren’t super large, but they’re big enough for our bodies to get out. Right now, we need to be completely out of the water, no legs in at all, no fingers, nothing. I watch with wide eyes as Row pulls himself up, his face pale, frantically gasping as he drags himself out of the water. His muscles bulge as he pulls up his body, one leg, and then the other. Just as his foot comes out of the water, the large nose of the shark comes up and after him, bumps the wood gently, and shies away. It could have bitten the wood, tested if it was food, and thrown Row back into the water, but it chose to leave it alone. It was redirected by the hard wood, thinking it had made a mistake.
“Fucking hell,” Creed breathes, staring at the deep water in fear. “Not even in my missions did I ever have such a close call.”
Row is freaking out, his whole body trembling at the near miss so much that his raft shakes. He’d nearly been eaten. A second longer and the great white would have definitely taken a bite. I can hear him muttering to himself as he curls up, keeping as far away from the water as possible, not even daring to get close to the edges.
The water is dark around us except for the reflection of the moon while we sit quietly, watching the water. We wait, and when I see small shark fins appear again, it’s almost a relief. Smaller sharks seem less intimidating than the monster we’d witnessed.
We’re all panting from the lack of oxygen, trying to ease the burning in our lungs. We’ve drifted off course just a little but not enough to make a difference. We only have a quarter of a mile to go. That’s all.
Achilles’ eyes are hard as he looks at us. “We use our hands the rest of the way. We only get back in the water if another patrol makes the rounds before we get there. Or if spotlights appear.” He looks down at the dark water warily. “Watch your fingers.”
