- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
“Very much so.” He sighs so deeply, I wonder how much he’s willing to say. “I joined when I was a teenager. I passed my initiation quickly, the oyabun taking a shine to me. I was young and ambitious and angry, so it was easy for me to follow the rules.”
I study his side profile, listening closely. “What happened to send you their way?”
“I had a sister,” he begins. “We lost our parents in some freak accident and we were placed under government care. It should have been fine. I was ten, old enough to take care of her, but we were caught up in some sort of war between the police and the local gangs. The government decided to try and wipe out the Yakuza and we happened the be in the square. My sister, Akiko, was shot and I couldn’t save her.”
“I’m sorry,” I whisper.
“It was a long time ago, but I was angry at the police for risking their people. The Yakuza, they didn’t shoot at the people. They were the ones who came to me to help. They were the ones who helped me bury my sister, so in the end, I joined out of loyalty.” His eyes meet mine. “That is where I learned how to kill.”
Our eyes stay locked for long moments, something passing between us. “Should that scare me?” I ask. “Should I be afraid of you?”
“Do you feel afraid?”
I take in everything about him, the way he watches me, the shape of his face, the ink pools of his eyes. “No,” I finally say. “I don’t feel afraid.”
He nods and something like a sense of relief passes over his eyes. “Whatever happens here, just know one thing, little rabbit.” He takes my fingers in his and tugs me to continue forward. “When we get off this island, there will be literal hell rained down on the Hound Society. Mark my words.”
I smile. “Count me in. All of these assholes should pay for what they’ve done.”
For a few seconds, we don’t say anything but it’s Jiro who ultimately breaks out silence.
“Back home,” he says softly, glancing over at me. “You don’t have anyone?”
My brow furrows. “Like a boyfriend?” When he nods, I shake my head. “Nope. No one. Men don’t usually like the whole dancer thing and the ones that are worth a shit are rare. I have a plant though. It’s probably dying now. The thirsty motherfucker usually wilts if I don’t water it for a few days.”
A smile tugs at his lips. “No pets?”
