- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
Fuck! Row is about to be toast and the others are firing where the first bullets came from. Thinking quickly, I look behind the man and see the sticks behind him. They’re sharpened, as if someone was preparing for a trap and got interrupted halfway through, but I don’t have time to think about how they came to be there. With as much force as I can muster, I slam my fist against the man’s knee with one hand and use the small hunting knife at my hip to stab it through his boot and into the top of his foot. He screams and goes down, falling backward with the momentum. The gun goes off, the bullets spraying up in the air and I duck again just in case they land near me. It’s not like my arms will stop a bullet though so if they fire in my direction, I’m dead. The others turn just as the Hound stumbles back, tripping over his painful feet, and slams into the sharpened sticks. I glance up just in time to see the largest one burst through his chest like a fucking alien baby.
I gag a little.
Meat hangs from the tip of the stick and it triggers the reflex before I can stop it.
“Got him!” Creed calls and the gunshots stop, leaving us in silence again.
The man I tripped stares down at the stick for a few seconds before he slumps, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
Achilles whistles. “That was quick thinking, Starbucks Princess. Good job.”
Scowling at him, I get to my feet and brush myself off before ripping my knife out of his boot. “Fuck off, Bear from Wish. Nobody cares about your approval.”
The only answer I get is his laughter.
“We should keep going in case that gunfight attracted any attention,” Jiro mentions, throwing his gun back over his shoulder. “We can keep—”
The battle cry comes from the right, and like a comedy, all five of us turn in that direction at the same time. This one isn’t a Hound judging by the ripped clothing and rough appearance, so I have to assume he’s Prey. He has a machete in his hand, the blade raised back over his shoulder as if he’s prepared to cut us down. I don’t see any guns but it isn’t like I have long minutes to figure it out. We have only seconds.
