  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

At some point, we cross another stream and fill up our canteens. At least the island seems to have plenty of water sources we can drink, but hiking up the steady incline from where the streams come from as well as the destination we need is a bitch. I’m glad I work on my cardio regularly. Otherwise, I would have already sat down and told them to go on without me. Besides my aching thighs, I’m starting to smell like a trash can. I wonder if anyone else grabbed deodorant in their duffels.

We figure we’ll head toward the building we can see and go from there. Either we’ll get shot at for approaching it or it’s abandoned. Either way, it might give us some clues as to where we are, and it’ll provide decent shelter for the night. From this distance, it looks like a barracks of some sort, all concrete and steel. It’s hard to tell what it is but the closer we get, the more I think how military-like it looks.

“Judging from the distance we’ve walked and how much further we have to that building on the edge of the island, I’d say this place is probably six miles wide at least,” Achilles says suddenly, his eyes on the building as we draw closer to it.

I glance at him in confusion. He can tell all that just from walking? How does someone get a built-in steps meter?

“And it’s curved,” Creed adds. “Clearly.”

Clearly, I snort to myself. As if some normal bitch like me could tell we’re on a six-mile-wide curved island in the middle of the ocean somewhere.

Achilles nods. “The climate is tropical.” He tilts his head back as if absorbing this god-awful humidity. “So we have to be somewhere that fits that. The wildlife is diverse but stunted.”

I frown. “What does that mean? Stunted?”

Achilles glances over at me with eyes too icy to be natural, and yet they are. It shouldn’t be legal for someone to have such glacial eyes. “Have you seen a single snake here?”

Pausing, I shake my head. “Come to think of it, no.”

I hadn’t noticed and made the connection, not because I’m not perceptive, but because I don’t particularly want to run into a snake, so I’ve just been thankful not to see one.
