- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
“I don’t get it,” I say, watching the meat cook with a watering mouth. I haven’t had anything but the fruits Creed drops from the trees since we got here. With Jiro here now prepared to knife birds, I’m looking forward to the protein. “Why take me? If what you said is true about the Hound Society, I definitely don’t fit.”
“You said you took self-defense classes,” Creed points out, as if that is the reason I was taken. I can’t tell if he means it or is simply trying to play devil’s advocate.
“Yeah, because I’m a dancer,” I argue. “I can’t even tell you the amount of times men get handsy and I have to put them in their place. I needed self-defense lessons for that alone, and then I took a few extra classes because I enjoyed it, but in no way do I move like either one of you.”
“The hunter mentioned someone by the name of Loyd,” Jiro points out. “I suspect he has something to do with you being here.”
“He must mean that asshole from the club,” I growl. “He offered four grand for a lap dance. I should have listened to my gut and refused. Pretty sure they chloroformed me and that’s how I ended up here. Either way, they put something over my mouth and I passed out before waking up in a fucking cage.”
Creed shrugs. “I was taken while putting out my trash can. Guys knocked me out before I could even turn and see the vehicle they popped out of.” He scowls at himself. “Fucking pathetic. I should have seen it from a mile away.”
“Don’t be too hard on yourself,” Jiro murmurs as he turns the meat. “They’ve spent decades perfecting how to take people without drawing attention.”
I look at the cut on his lip and the split on his eyebrow he’s had since the cargo plane. “Did you see them coming?”
Nodding, he pulls the first bird from the fire and hands it to me. Gratefully, I tear some meat off before passing the rest to Creed. He’s a lot bigger than me. He needs more protein and I can survive on far less.
“They sent a group of twelve for me. I only lost because one of them played dirty and hit me from behind.” He pulls the second bird from the fire. “I took out six of them before they got me.”
“Jesus,” I muse. “What kind of machine are you?”
