Once I have everything packed well, I thread the straps of the duffle bag through my arms and wear it like a backpack before darting further into the trees, staying low and hiding behind trunks and palm leaves in case someone is watching. I need to find that clean water source if there’s even any on the island at all. My throat is already dry from however long we were on the cargo plane.
I come to a line of trees and realize I’ve reached at least one edge of the island. In front of me, the trees disappear into a beach and the shoreline stares at me. The ocean crashes against the sand, and I realize I’m looking at a way off. I’m getting ready to step into the open and take the risk of being a target when a man appears, frantically running along the waves. He’s gathering pieces of driftwood, clearly planning to make a raft. Something tells me to hunker down and watch, so that’s what I do. I’m almost not surprised when the man gets a rough raft pushed into the water and a boat comes flying around the island out of nowhere. It’s fast, and there’s a bunch of men in black gear on it holding guns. The man is already floating on the water and when they raise their weapons, he has barely any time at all to leap from the raft and swim back to shore, bullets flying around him, purposely not hitting him. They’re not trying to kill him. Not yet. It’s a warning.
He makes it to shore and runs back into the trees, glancing back once at the boat before disappearing. The boat continues on its patrol as if nothing happened and I watch as the raft floats out to sea. It would have never made it that far anyway. It’s already falling apart just with the waves.
Eying the water, I know it won’t do me any good for drinking, but it could be prime hunting grounds if I can figure out how to spear fish. Too bad it’s too wide open to risk it. I’d be a sitting duck for all to see if I went out there.
Turning around, I nearly scream when I run right into an expansive chest. A large hand clamps over my mouth and I’m about to start kicking before I see his face and the finger he holds to his lips. Then he points back out on the beach and my eyes follow the movement.
Three men walk along the sand, unafraid of any enemies they may encounter in the wide open. They’re laughing, and when their words reach us, my heart kicks in my chest.
