- ABOUT THE AUTHOR

My heart threatens to burst out of my chest as I stand, the bits and bobs that Row bought for me and shoved in a tourist bag bumping at my side. The laminated map is in there, hidden away. I don’t really know what to do with it now that I know I can report this. Besides all that, it feels strange to no longer have a weapon. I could have never brought it in the airport though, so I’d had to toss my hunting knife into the trash with my dress. There’s also a wad of money in the bag at my side, there to make sure I get home without worry. A gift from Row. Turning, I study each of them, emotion clogging my throat as they call my boarding group.
Creed stands first. Of course he does. He drags me into a bear hug and holds me tight for long seconds before pressing a chaste kiss to my lips. He passes me to Row, who holds me a little desperately, his arms tight around me. His kiss lingers, as if there’s more he’d like to say but doesn’t have time for it. Achilles grins crookedly at me when I turn to him. His fingers twine into my hair as he presses a commanding kiss on my lips, his other hand gripping my ass. No tight bear hug from him, only a sensual reminder. And then Jiro. He smiles gently and it feels like a goodbye. Of all of them, he’ll be the furthest away, on the other side of the world. When he pulls me close, it feels like forever, and I know, I’m not going to forget any of them. Each is so different from each other, each so strong. We survived Hell and came out the other side.
“We’ll see each other again,” he promises with a whisper.
When I pull away, the speaker crackles again for my plane to board. Apparently, there isn’t many of us on the flight.
“Don’t be strangers,” I choke, looking between all of them.
Their expressions vary from sadness to a crooked smile, but each of them looks at me like I’m the color yellow, like I’m the knife that brought them home, the gun that defended their lives.
When no one says anything else, too much emotion between us, I turn and cross the aisle to my gate. Handing the ticket to the attendant, she scans it and hands it back. “Enjoy your flight,” she says cheerfully, unaware of the turmoil inside me.
