- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
The others have their eyes open just like I do, watching the sharks in case they get too close. I watch as one comes up and tries to nibble at Row’s foot. It jerks away in fear when he barely moves his foot away. A gentle nibble isn’t a big deal. It’s the bigger nibbles I’m worried about.
Something hits the top of my raft and jostles it, as if the guards are pushing at it to double check it’s just wood. We tied them together in a way that they shouldn’t see the ties. They also shouldn’t see me, or the pistol strapped to the bottom. If they do, then we’ll have to get onto the boat and dispose of them before either can sound the alarm. A risk and one we’ll likely fail. Row said the guards check in every two minutes with a buzzer. The moment one doesn’t check in, the alarm sounds and the patrol boats are remotely shut down from the compound. We can’t get away from the island in only two minutes. It would be impossible and we’d be sitting ducks.
I feel something tap at my ass, probably a shark nibbling at me. I flinch but don’t move otherwise, desperate for the guards to just go. My lungs are starting to burn like fire, begging for more air than the reed is providing. My eyes are burning just as badly but I refuse to close them and risk not seeing something big coming for me.
Go away, go away, go away, I repeat in my head like a mantra, both to the guards and the sharks. We’re running out of time. I don’t know how long I can breathe through the reed before my body will start to convulse. Can I suffocate from too little air? Likely, I’ll just pass out, which is just as dangerous. If I pass out and float up, we’re fucked. If I pass out and stay under the raft, I’ll drown.
I watch as one of the medium sharks comes moseying up to Row, almost lazily, curious about why he smells like food. It opens its mouth and my heart kicks in my chest as it goes for his waist. If he gets bitten there, that’ll be a problem. We won’t be able to save him. Something in me desperately hopes I don’t have to watch someone I care about get eaten alive. I don’t know if I’ll ever recover from that.
Row certainly won’t.
