When the plane comes to a stop, my heart rate kicks higher, the flight or fight instinct waring within me. On one hand, if I run the moment I get a chance to, I might get away. On the other, I’m pissed off, and taking some people with me into death sounds like a good plan. I’m debating my options when a mechanical sound buzzes through the cabin and the back of the plane starts to open, letting in bright sunshine that stings my eyes after so long in the dark cargo plane. The moment the back is fully open, something along the floor comes to life and the cages begin to move as if on a conveyor belt toward the back of the plane. I grip onto the sides of my cage tightly as I begin to jostle, following the other cages down and out into the bright sunshine. The air is humid, tropical, but I can hardly focus on that as I realize just how many other cages there are. Besides the cages, there are also a ton of crates, clearly filled with things other than people. We kind of haphazardly clatter out of the plane and slam against each other, the movement jerking me around until I’m sure I’ll have plenty of bruises. Once all the containers and cages are off of the plane, it starts to move, dragging the back end until the last crate is free before it begins to close. It taxis away, heading back in the opposite direction. I stare in horror as the plane picks up speed and lifts off again, leaving us all behind on the runway.
The cages beep the moment the wheels are off the ground, the door making a little click sound that draws my eyes.
Hesitantly, I try the door again and stare in surprise when it opens fully. Someone must have remotely unlocked the cages. I take longer to burst from the cage than the others do, knowing full well I’m at a disadvantage when I see man after man leave their confines.
Not a single woman appears out of the dozens of cages, until I’m certain I’m the only one. Fuck. That can’t be good. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe this isn’t trafficking at all and I’ve found myself in some other shitty situation.
Carefully, I stand from the cage, making sure to keep the coat wrapped around me and not reveal what I’m wearing. I stretch, trying to bring more feeling back into my arms and legs after the tight confines. The Asian man stands in front of me, his eyes on my movements before looking around the group.
