  70. TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
  71. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  72. ALSO BY KENDRA

“He’s a hazard if we help him,” Achilles cuts me off.

“We fixed your cut,” I argue.

“This isn’t just a cut, Billie. Look at his leg. Not only is it broken, but with the force that bear trap probably closed, I bet that leg is barely held on by strings of flesh. It’s a fatal injury here. We’re too far from anything that could help.”

“But—”

“He’s right,” Creed adds. “We’d have to carry him, and he would slow us down. That’s if he doesn’t bleed out here in the next thirty minutes. He won’t make it.”

I look between them and then at Jiro. “You can’t expect us to just leave him,” I argue.

When I look back at Achilles, his face is cold. There’s no empathy there, only cold hard reason. The survivalist sees a weakness and decides. There’s no mercy. I can’t say I like the look that covers his face right now. I’m not sure if that makes him a monster or not.

Creed sighs. “Normally, I’d say we leave no man behind, no matter if he’s a friend or not, but this isn’t war, and he isn’t our comrade. They’ve all been trying to kill us since we landed on this fucking island.”

“So you’re saying he’s right?” I growl, staring between them. I look at Jiro again. “What do you say?”

He meets my eyes. “They’re right. We cannot help him.”

Row stays silent, clearly knowing his opinion holds no sway. He looks green at the sight of the man’s leg, at the way the bear trap cuts into it, but he doesn’t speak up.

“Please,” the man says again, his face pinched in pain. “You don’t have to carry me. Just don’t leave me here with no weapons.” He pulls a pistol from beneath him. “My pistol. It’s out of ammo.”

We all stare down at the man, my own stomach churning at what he’s asking. I glance up, not sure what I expect, but Achilles’ eyes meet mine.

“We can’t help him,” he says coldly, and I know he’s right. They’re all right. I certainly can’t carry the man and with the amount of blood already on the ground, it’s a wonder he’s still coherent. But it’ll stains something in my soul to not at least try. Creed is right. This isn’t war. This is a stranger who would kill me if given the chance. But I never wanted to be in this situation.

My soul will be plenty stained after we get off this island. No matter what happens, this game will force us to lose one way or the other. I hate it. I understand it, but I hate it.
