- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
Before us, just on the edge of the beach, one of the hunters has one of the Preys on his knees before him. Two others stand with him leering at the man on his knees. There’s blood dripping down the side of the Prey’s face from a nasty gash in his head. It’s starting to dry but still looks fresh enough that I think it’s recent. His lip is split, and he looks pretty rough though I don’t know if that’s from the beating he probably took or the island itself. Not every Prey is bound to be experts at survival. I’m certainly not.
“I thought you lot were supposed to be difficult to hunt,” the main hunter says with a shake of his head. The other two hunters laugh and clap him on the shoulder proudly, as if this is just the epitome of what a man should be proud of. Pigs.
“He’ll make a nice trophy,” one of the others says, his eyes crinkled with pride, like they’re a father and a son. “You did good. Go on and finish the job.”
The man on the ground isn’t one I recognize immediately so he must not have been near me in the cages, but that isn’t surprising. There were so many of us and it was a stressful situation. I’m lucky I recognized Jiro. The man on the ground is glaring up at the predator and when he opens his mouth to speak, it’s in a different language I don’t understand. The tone tells me everything though. The animosity there, the anger, he’s definitely telling the hunter to go fuck himself. The hunter only laughs at the garbled words, clearly not understanding either. Then, without waiting any longer, he pulls out a gun and smiles.
“See you in Hell, Prey. Tell the devil the Hounds sent you.” He points the gun at the man on the ground and doesn’t hesitate.
Bang!
I jump at the sudden sound, but I don’t make any noise for fear I’ll draw attention. I’m learning. Don’t give away our position, don’t attract unwanted attention. Death is starting to be normal for me and I don’t like it. My stomach doesn’t even turn at the sight of the blood this time as the man collapses with a bullet hole in his forehead, but it does when the hunter leans down and rips off the gold necklace from the man’s neck. It looks like it means something, a symbol on it that feels religious, and the hunter, the Hound, holds it up proudly.
“I’m going to frame this,” he declares, and the others whistle and congratulate him. “Now, let’s go see how many others we can catch before the game ends. I’m betting I’ll have a whole box of trophies by the end of this.”
