I turn, preparing to lead Jiro deeper into the compound and make our way to the docks. I hadn’t looked behind me before I turned and I run into someone who was walking too close behind me. The man immediately apologizes, looking down at my face with a face bright red from alcohol. Sweat coats his forehead and when his free hand touches my forearm in apology, I can feel how clammy he is.
“I’m terribly sorry. . .Hey, don’t I know you?” he asks, his double chin shaking in concentration, trying to find the memory.
“No, you don’t,” I say, trying to go around him.
“No, I’ve seen your face before. I swear.” He taps his lip. “The Anderson’s annual party?”
I shake my head. “I’ve never met you. Now, if you’ll excuse me—”
I see the moment he realizes despite the alcohol in his system. His eyes widen, and he glances from me to the screens in the betting station where my picture flashes next to the listed bets. Those pictures are a mixture of my face while working in the club and an image of me flipping off the cameras on Prey Island, my eyes fierce. “You’re—”
There’s no time to overthink. I immediately grab him by the forearms, throw out a tinkling laugh when a few people look over at the movement, and start shoving him to the nearest closed door. “I have to have you right now!” I laugh, playing up the flirty damsel, and they look away, content to let debauchery happen. No one wants to linger over sex here. I’m sure there’s other places for that.
Jiro leads the way quickly but casually, pushing a door open and letting us pass before the man can shout his alarm. His drink makes him slow, makes his speech a little slurred and confused. The door slams shut behind us after I push this man into the room. Weak, but rich. Pathetic. He wouldn’t last a day out on Prey Island.
But me? I’ve lasted ten.
The room is beautiful and if I had time to study it, I might have admired the balcony overlooking the ocean and a lower pavilion where people are milling about. But I don’t have time for that. I pull the hunting knife from my thigh and immediately stab the man in the neck, assuming it’s better for him to choke on his blood rather than be able to scream. I stab, each mark a specific requirement. Neck, stomach, heart. Cut off air, destroy the blood, and one for pain. The pain is for me, my own petty revenge while he dies.
