- TO CONTINUE THE ADVENTURE…
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ALSO BY KENDRA
We fall into comfortable silence, listening to the ocean waves crash against the rocks in the distance and the soft sounds of the jungle. It’s still quieter than I assumed a jungle would sound like, but Row says it’s because of the nuclear testing. At one point, these islands were uninhabitable. Now, it’ll take the wildlife a while to come back fully, especially being an island. I also point out that the games they play probably lead to some of the wildlife that makes it here being killed for food and Row agrees. After all, you need things for your Prey to eat. Apparently, the Hound Society brings in some animals after each hunt to let the population repair itself.
To have so much money at your disposal to just correct things and not use it for good, it doesn’t make sense to me. I would have loved to simply help the planet, to fix humanity’s mistakes, but no. The elite do nothing more than add to their pockets. Someone should really do something about that.
“What’s the first thing you’ll do once you get home?” I ask suddenly, not daring to look at them while I ask the question.
“Find a Taco Bell,” Achilles mumbles. “I’m going to buy so many fucking tacos.” Achilles looks over at Row. “How about you, little mouse?”
Row scowls at the nickname but still answers. “Shower, probably. Maybe relax by the pool.”
Creed shifts in his spot, and I feel sorry for him. As big as he is, it’s a wonder he found any spot that was comfortable. “I have a ranch so first thing I’ll do is make sure all the animals are okay. The ranch hand should be taking care of them in my absence but who knows. I hope my horses are okay.”
I perk up. “You have horses?”
“I have three,” he says proudly. Then his gaze shifts to me. “You should come visit them sometime. They like women.”
Achilles snorts. “The horses won’t be the only thing she rides on.”
My face doesn’t flush. It’s kind of open knowledge now and honestly, what is there to hide at this point?
Jiro is the closest one to me. I reach out and touch his arm. “What about you, Jiro? What’s the first thing you’ll do?”
He hesitates before meeting my eyes. “Start hunting.”
Row freezes. “For what?”
Jiro raises his brow. “Hounds.”
So it seems I’m not the only one who wants revenge. I agree we should escape with our lives but once we do, we’re going to be liabilities. We know the location of Prey Island. I have the map in my backpack, and it’s laminated so it’ll make it across the trek tomorrow. We’ve gathered intimate details of the Hound Society.
And bonus, I now know a Hound.
