She stands up and gives him a hug, noticing how different his body feels to her husband’s. Rob is thinner, less sturdy somehow. She can’t remember what it feels like to be so close to any man other than Greg. ‘Actually, Rob, there is something,’ she says, pulling away. ‘You know the night of the dinner party?’

Rob’s face reddens. ‘Um, yeah. What about it?’

‘I know you didn’t see him after that, but did Greg text you or anything?’

‘No,’ he says, frowning. ‘I don’t think so. I would have told you. Why?’

‘I’m just trying to work out if there was something bothering him. He didn’t seem the same after that night. He was… distracted. Distant.’

She studies Rob’s face, waiting for him to piece together what she might be suggesting. She has no intention of screwing with his marriage – he doesn’t deserve that – she only wants him to look at Abby, to turn in her direction and see everything he needs to see. That way he might end up helping Sienna, albeit unwittingly. ‘He seemed fine that night,’ Rob says, after a moment. ‘In really good spirits actually. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting him to go along with the whole thing. I thought that if anyone would scupper your idea it would be Greg.’

This thought has been bothering her too. It should have been Greg who refused, drunk or not. Up until now, she’s blamed the alcohol, but now she must face the possibility that she might have given Greg exactly what he wanted.

‘Then don’t you think it’s strange that he would just leave me a few days later?’ she asks Rob.

Once again, his face turns a shade of puce. ‘I…’

‘It’s okay. It’s a possibility I have to consider, as much as I don’t want to believe he could leave in such a heartless way.’ She finishes her coffee. ‘It’s better than the alternative, though, isn’t it?’ She doesn’t wait for an answer. She can tell Rob’s beginning to feel uneasy, and that’s the last thing she wants. ‘According to Abby he didn’t say anything unusual to her, and she’d have no reason to hold anything back, would she? I mean, she’s such a great friend but I know she wants to protect my feelings at all costs.’ She lets this hang in the air for a moment, willing it to leave an imprint in Rob’s mind.

‘She’d definitely tell you everything,’ Rob says. ‘If Greg had given her any hint that he wasn’t happy, or was about to leave, then she’d have told you way before he actually left.’

‘Or went missing,’ Sienna reminds him.

‘Yeah, sorry.’ He lowers his eyes.
