Sienna bites her lip. ‘I do. And I’m worried about that, too. I’ve kept things from them myself, and I could look just as guilty if they root around in my life. Maybe that doesn’t matter any more. All that matters is justice for Greg. He deserves that, doesn’t he? Especially as he didn’t kill anyone.’ She pauses. ‘The police might want to question you about it, but they’ll soon realise it wasn’t you, just as I hope they’ll realise it wasn’t me.’ She grabs Abby’s arm. ‘I think it’s time to tell them, and we can do it together. I’ve been thinking about it a lot, and we’re impeding their investigation by holding things back, aren’t we? We need to tell them everything.’
Abby knows Sienna is right; it’s the only way to put an end to this and lay Greg to rest. ‘Let me talk to Mark first. I’ll find out what he’s got to do with it.’ She shudders. It can’t be possible that the man she’s spent most of her life in love with has taken someone’s life.
After a moment, Sienna agrees. ‘Okay. But go now. And Abby?’
She turns to face Sienna.
‘You need to be careful.’
The lights are off in Mark’s flat, his Volvo not in its usual spot across the road. She scans the rest of the street in case, but there’s no sign of it, not even a car of the same make or colour to give her a temporary flutter of hope.
She knocks on his door anyway. It’s late now, so he could have gone to bed, although this theory doesn’t explain his missing car. When there’s no answer, she pulls her phone from her bag. There are seven missed calls from Mark and four text messages, but nothing since she left Sienna’s house. His silence worries her more than him bombarding her with calls.
Abby needs to take control of this. She calls his mobile, pressing the phone to her ear. There’s no answer, and she knows why; he’s worked out why she left without a word.
A whole night alone in the house looms ahead of her, and that determines what she needs to do next. Mark doesn’t know anyone in London well enough to be with them at this time of night, so that leaves only one place he could be.
FORTY-NINE
Abby
Ordinarily, she’d be too tired to drive such a distance this late at night, but she’s fuelled with adrenalin; she needs to find Mark now. She should have stayed at his flat, confronted him when she had the chance. She regrets this now.
