I know what we did was wrong, I’ve been telling myself that ever since it happened. But it was impossible to keep my hands off you. I needed you, Abby, and I think you needed me too. Can we talk? Please. Properly this time. I’m ashamed of how I acted, and what I did, when we last saw each other and I want to make it up to you.

Please reply to this.

She reads it again, and then a third time, until the words begin swimming before her, a jumbled pattern, something frightening, yet she wants desperately to bring them to life.

She makes invisible circles with the mouse, watching the cursor spin around until it lands on the reply button. Of course she doesn’t click on it, instead shutting the laptop down and placing it back in the drawer.

The chance to reply has passed. It is far too late for that now.

Sienna

Day three. With each passing hour it gets harder to deal with. There’s a bomb beneath her, and the threat that she’ll set it off is there with every step she takes.

In a few moments she’ll be face to face with Holly, the woman Greg loved, and she can’t quite grasp that this is real. She’s rarely been within a metre of her. Whenever she’s dropped Jackson off, or picked him up, all she glimpses of Holly is her tall frame in the doorway. There’s always a friendly nod from her before Sienna closes the door, but Holly has never felt the need to speak to her. Holly has moved on from Greg; it’s clear that she couldn’t care less what he does with his personal life. This should have made it easier for Sienna to deal with, but it hasn’t. Greg didn’t want his marriage to end. Sienna is his second choice.

It’s late morning, and she’s taken a gamble that Holly will be at work. She’s a mortgage broker, her office nestled between a florist shop and a bakery on Richmond High Street. Sienna pushes through the doors with every ounce of confidence she can muster. Will Holly even speak to her? She can’t see why not when there’s been no animosity between them, and Holly’s always happy for Jackson to spend time with Sienna.

Before she can approach anyone to ask for her, Holly appears, walking towards Sienna with a warm smile on her face. Then recognition hits, and a frown replaces her smile.

‘Sienna? What’s going on?’

‘Is there somewhere we can talk?’ She looks around the open-plan office. It can’t be here. ‘In private?’
