‘I just mean that she was the one who left him, and Greg was in pieces. He never explicitly said that she’d left him for someone else, but I got that impression.’

Whether or not this is true, for Sienna it has no relevance. She’s not going to judge Holly – the woman has already admitted she couldn’t give Greg the love he needed.

‘Okay. I just needed to be sure. There is just one other thing I wanted to ask you. Do you remember when we all met for dinner that last time? And Greg was late?’

He nods. ‘Yes. I didn’t know that would be one of the last times I’d see him.’

She ignores this. ‘You’d asked me about having kids, and when I said Greg and I weren’t planning to, you were about to say something, but we got interrupted when Greg turned up. What were you about to say?’

Marty frowns, and she expects he’ll say he can’t remember. ‘I was just surprised, I think, as Greg had recently been saying he could see himself being a dad again.’ He pats her arm. ‘I’m sorry, Sienna.’

Hearing this, Sienna almost struggles to breathe. She can’t find any words to say, instead lifting her coffee and forcing herself to drink.

Marty, too, is silent now and, whatever he’s thought of her in the past, she’s quite certain that this will be the last time she sees him. Without Greg, there is no reason for them to be in contact. Before they leave this place, he will give her assurances that he’s there for her if ever she needs him – he’ll say ‘they’, meaning Jo and him, just so there’s no way to misinterpret what he means. And she will thank him and pretend that this isn’t the end of a chapter.

‘Thanks for meeting me today,’ Sienna says. ‘Anyway, drink up, I know you’ve got work to get to.’

She walks along the river before she gets the Tube home. She’s always found strolling aimlessly gives her head the space it needs to order her thoughts. Just as she’s suspected, everything points in the direction of Abby lying, but she still needs to get a feel for Holly’s thoughts. It won’t be a case of being direct, as she has been with Marty; the last thing she wants to do is cause her any offence.

And when she is convinced that Holly knows nothing about what Greg has supposedly done, it will be time to go to the police.

THIRTY-SIX

Abby

Rob is away again – this time, on a business trip to Manchester. They barely speak during the day, and half the time he falls asleep on the sofa. She’s tried to talk to him about Sienna, but he shuts the conversation down and tells her to leave it alone.
