Abby struggles for breath. ‘Fine,’ she says. ‘He was… easy to talk to.’ She almost winces.
‘Is there anything else you can tell us that might help our investigation? Anything at all?’
She shakes her head.
‘Let us know if you do think of anything.’ He glances around the room before fixing his eyes on her once more. ‘You’d be surprised what people remember given a bit of time. Things that might not seem important, then suddenly are.’ He smiles. It’s not a comforting or friendly gesture.
Abby half expects him to confront her right then and there until DC Roberts suddenly stands. ‘Well, thank you for your time. We’ll be in touch if we need to ask you anything else.’
Once he’s gone, she closes the front door and leans back against it, her breathing rapid and shallow. What kind of game is Sienna playing?
‘I went to see her,’ Abby tells Rob when he calls later that evening. She’s not going to keep from him that the police paid her a visit; she just won’t tell him over the phone when he’s in another country.
‘And how is she?’ His voice sounds different, although she can’t figure out in what way. Quieter perhaps. Subdued.
‘Well, she seems to think I know where Greg is.’ She has to tell Rob at least this much; she hates keeping this from him.
‘It doesn’t make sense,’ he says. ‘Why would she think that?’
‘I think she’s just getting paranoid because he stayed the night here. She assumes he must have told me that he was planning to leave her. Something like that. It’s nonsense, Rob – he said nothing about leaving her.’
Rob falls silent, weighing up her words. What sense is he making of them?
‘Are you having a good time there?’ she asks when he doesn’t reply. She needs to steer him away from the conversation they’ve been having.
‘Actually, yes, it’s been good to spend time with my parents,’ he says, quickly falling silent again.
When it becomes clear he won’t say anything else, Abby speaks. ‘What have you been doing?’
‘Mum and I have been going for long walks, just talking about… everything.’
She doesn’t like the sound of this; there’s no telling what poison Lillian is infecting him with. ‘Just you and your mum? Doesn’t your dad go with you?’
‘He’s done something to his ankle and can’t do too much at the moment. He’s mostly been sitting by the pool reading. He’s fine, though. Look, I’d better go. I’ll see you on Friday. Flight’s at twelve so I should be back around dinner time.’
Two more nights; that’s all she has to get through. Daytimes are fine, but when darkness falls it brings with it the intense feeling that she’s not safe.
