‘I’m in the dark about so much too, Rob. I don’t know where Greg is, or why he left. All I know is that he became distant after the dinner party. He’s never been the most affectionate man, especially in public, but this was something else. And right before he went missing, he told me that he doesn’t trust Abby, that he’d seen a different side to her after being alone with her that night.’
Rob stares at her; this will be a shock to him, something new to digest along with all the doubt already in his mind. It takes him a minute to speak. ‘What did he mean?’
‘That’s the thing, I don’t know. He wouldn’t explain himself, and it’s impossible getting information out of Greg at the best of times.’
Again, Rob is silent, digesting this new information. ‘What do you think he meant?’
At the time she hadn’t known, but now it is clear, even though it makes Greg a hypocrite. Abby may have shown herself to be untrustworthy by cheating on Rob, but Greg did exactly the same. So why had he turned it all on Abby? Something else must have happened between them.
‘Maybe they had some sort of argument?’ she tells Rob, omitting the rest of what’s weighing her down. ‘I’ve tried to talk to her, but she won’t explain anything.’
‘I’ll talk to her,’ Rob says. ‘There’s another thing I don’t understand. When you came to our house that night, you mentioned going to the police about Abby. What did you mean?’
‘If she wasn’t going to be honest with me, then I thought maybe the police could get the truth out of her.’
‘About where Greg is?’
She nods.
‘But we can’t be sure that Abby knows anything about that, can we?’ Rob is already talking himself out of believing Sienna. She needs to try harder. ‘And what’s this about Brighton?’
Sienna tells him about the police tracing Greg’s debit card.
‘Well, that’s good news, isn’t it? It means he’s—’
‘Alive? Yes. Unless someone stole his wallet.’ That doesn’t seem likely, though, when they’ve only used it to buy a coffee. ‘And he’s still not home, is he?’ she continues. ‘He still left without a word, without taking anything.’
Rob nods.
‘Anyway, I’m ready to confront him on Monday, and maybe then we’ll both have some answers.’
‘Yes,’ Rob says. ‘That’s what we all need.’
When he leaves a short time later, Sienna can’t be sure where Rob’s mind is.
This is okay, though. Maybe it’s good that he will have these last few days before his world crashes down around him. She will be there to pick up the pieces.
