Mark is still a big question mark hanging over her. He can’t deal with the fact that she thought he might have been capable of killing someone. Maybe Abby understands this; it’s the lowest you can ever think of another person.
She drives away, recalling that at one point she thought Sienna was responsible for Greg being missing. And as much as she tries, she can’t pinpoint how or why that changed.
FIFTY-TWO
Sienna
As far as she knows, Rob is still at the police station, being questioned by DC Roberts and his colleagues. Something will happen now. Justice for Greg. It’s all too surreal for her to get to grips with. Rob. Kind, loving Rob. Did Greg die because of Rob’s desperate love for Abby? Is that what loving someone can reduce us to? It doesn’t bear thinking about.
‘What time’s Mum coming?’ Jackson asks.
‘Her flight lands at ten to four, so allowing for baggage reclaim, I reckon she’ll get here just after dinner. Is that okay?’
He nods. ‘Yeah. I like being here. But d’you mind if I go to my friend Luca’s for a bit. He’s got this new Xbox game.’
Sienna smiles. ‘Of course.’ This is progress. Other than at school, Jackson has barely seen any of his friends since Greg died. ‘Do you want a lift?’
‘It’s okay – I’ve got my bike.’
‘I’ll have to call your friend’s mum, though, to make sure she’s expecting you. And just be back for dinner, okay?’ Hearing her own words makes her smile. She sounds like a mother. She likes to think Greg would have been proud to see how much she’s bonded with Jackson.
Once she’s alone, guilt sets in. In her mind, she’s convicted Rob without a trial. She knows that there’s no firm evidence against him, and that sooner or later she might be back where she was, but this is the closest she’s come to any kind of closure, and she wants to cling on to it as hard as she can. DC Roberts has already told her that the best they can hope for is a confession; all she can do is pray that Rob does the right thing.
Desperate for an update, she calls DC Roberts, only to be told that he’s in an interview at the moment and she’ll have to leave a message. ‘If he could call me back when he’s free,’ she explains. ‘My name’s Sienna Wells.’
After that she plans what to make for dinner. Pasta is Jackson’s favourite, and it doesn’t take long to cook. She’s already called his friend Luca’s mother, and she kindly insisted that she’ll drop Jackson back by six. ‘His bike will easily fit in our boot,’ she’d said.
