Lillian lowers her voice, back to being calm, her head held high. ‘Not if I’ve got anything to do with it. Rob needs to see that you’re no good for him, and it’s only a matter of time before he opens his eyes.’

It’s only because she’s afraid of what she might say that Abby turns and leaves. If she stays to continue this fight, there really will be no going back. Rob will be devastated to learn of the tension between her and his mother, let alone a full-blown fight.

If only his mother knew that she doesn’t have to do a thing to blow apart Abby’s marriage to Rob. That is already happening.

FOURTEEN

Abby

The last thing Abby expects when she gets home on Monday evening is to find Sienna in her living room, drinking coffee with Rob.

Her morning encounter with Lillian hit her hard, so on a whim she drove to Ipswich; Mel would help her escape for a few hours, even if she couldn’t know what was happening in Abby’s life.

But her friend had been rushing to an optician appointment when she arrived, so for an hour and a half Abby had sat alone in her flat, using her phone to scan the internet for everything she could find on Greg Wells. She’d expected there to be nothing other than his work at the hospital, yet still the disappointment was crushing. She needed something. Anything. When Mel came back, Abby hadn’t mentioned anything, made sure Mel mostly talked about herself; for two hours at least, she could pretend that Greg and Sienna didn’t exist.

And now Sienna is sitting in her house, and who knows what she and Rob have been talking about. She has to face it; most likely Sienna is here because she knows. Abby’s legs weaken beneath her, as if they won’t bear her weight for much longer.

‘Sienna’s here,’ Rob says, as if she won’t have noticed. ‘She came by to give me this.’ He holds up his driving licence. ‘I must have dropped it the night of the party.’

‘I know it was a while ago,’ Sienna adds, ‘but I only just found it buried under the sofa cushions.’ She says this too quickly, as if she is expecting Abby to question it. ‘Rob said you’d be back soon, so I wanted to wait for you.’

How long has she been here? An hour? Longer? Abby will check with Rob later. He seems relaxed enough, so even if Sienna does know something, it’s unlikely she’s mentioned it.

‘Is there any news?’ Abby asks, knowing there can’t be.
