Holly exhales deeply. ‘I don’t know, Sienna. I’ll have to let him know, but maybe I’ll just wait a day or two more? He’ll be devastated, and if Greg’s about to stroll in at any minute, which I’m sure he is, then maybe it’s best not to upset him until we know more?’
Sienna’s not sure she agrees with this – isn’t it better that Jackson knows straight away? She can’t insist on this, though, when he is Holly’s son. ‘Whatever you think.’
‘Oh I don’t know. I’ll probably change my mind in an hour. It’s so hard knowing the right thing to do as a parent. And I definitely don’t always get it right.’ She picks up a business card from the small pile on her desk and hands it to Sienna. ‘Here’s my number. I can let you know if Jackson hears from him.’
‘Thank you. I’ll call you so you can save mine in your phone.’
When she stands to leave, Holly places her hand on Sienna’s arm. ‘Please try not to worry. Greg can take good care of himself.’
Walking back to her car, she tries to believe this, but her jumbled thoughts keep coming back to one thing: Abby is lying to her about something. And what would make her friend do that?
SIXTEEN
Abby
Sleeping at night is impossible. She should shut this all down, block out these intrusive thoughts of Greg, convince herself she’ll never have to face Sienna if she just steps away. But the guilt won’t allow her to do that – both her mind and body are ruled by it. No matter what she does, the shadow of Greg hangs over her, and Rob, although he doesn’t know it.
It is something Rob says on Wednesday morning that plants the seed in her head.
‘Hey, imagine if she did something to Greg.’ Rob is buttering his toast. It almost makes her angry that he’s oblivious, able to do something so normal like preparing breakfast without anything weighing him down, making his actions feel purposeless.
‘What are you talking about?’ But Abby knows, of course she does.
‘Sienna. You said they’d had an argument. What if she…’ He stops when he registers her expression. ‘Hey, sorry. I was only joking. I’d never think Sienna could harm anyone, let alone her husband.’
Abby changes the topic, but Rob’s words remain in her head.
Later, when she’s alone, she pictures the argument she had with Greg in the park, how she’s never felt anger like that before. How easy it is to snap.
Just as she’s buried deep in these murky thoughts, Sienna texts, and Abby almost forgets to breathe.
It’s been four days and I’m really scared now. Can I come over? Could do with my friend right now.
