‘Maybe she wanted to be seen quicker?’
‘She was already his patient, though, so Greg would have been determining how often she needed to be seen. Going to his private clinic wouldn’t have made any difference, would it?’
It had been a long time since Greg stopped working at the private clinic, before he and Sienna had got together; he’d always told her that he left because he needed to spend more time with Jackson, who was much younger at the time. His private work had been too consuming, he’d claimed. Sienna had bought into this reason, even though it had surprised her that it was the private work he’d give up. Now, though, she wonders if there was another reason.
‘Anyway,’ Rosa continues, ‘one day I saw her downstairs in the coffee shop, sitting by herself. I thought it was strange as she didn’t have an appointment, but I gave it no more attention until I saw you yesterday. Now, I’m not saying there was anything going on with her and Greg, and it’s a huge leap to assume that, but… now I just don’t know. She was always so dressed up for her appointments – that may have just been how she always liked to dress, but who knows? I just always had a strange feeling about her.’
There is something in what Rosa’s telling her – there has to be. ‘Can you tell me her name? What was she seeing him for?’
‘I can’t tell you that, Sienna. It’s confidential, isn’t it? Please don’t ask me.’
‘But Greg’s dead,’ she says, stunning herself with how she has just thrown this statement out so casually. ‘He’ll never know.’
‘But his patient isn’t.’
Sienna wishes she could explain to Rosa how wrong she is. That both of them are dead now, and perhaps what’s happened to each of them might be tied together. ‘Please, Rosa. We’ve known each other a long time, haven’t we? I would never, ever put your job at risk. I just need to know her name.’
Silence. She won’t do it; Rosa is kind but she’s also stubborn.
‘Please. I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important.’
A heavy sigh, but it’s better than the silence. ‘Her name was Leela Hall. That’s all I can tell you.’ She pauses. ‘I’d better go. My daughter and grandson will be here soon, and I need to get dinner started.’
‘Thank you, Rosa.’ Sienna wishes she could express just how grateful she is.
When she goes back to the kitchen, Jackson is still peeling the potatoes. He looks up at her, smiling briefly before turning back to what he’s doing.
Watching him now, Sienna vows that she will find out what Greg did, and if it’s the reason he’s dead.
