She smiles, even though he’s not looking at her. ‘I know. Abby always does the right thing; I’ve learned that much about her.’
This seems to put Rob at ease once more. She has to be careful; if Abby isn’t on her side, then she at least needs Rob to be.
‘What are your plans for today?’ he asks.
She shrugs. She might just stay around the house, make some calls to see if anyone’s heard anything in the last couple of days. This is what she tells him.
‘Okay, that’s good. Our house is your house.’ Rob finishes his coffee and places his cup in the dishwasher.
‘Thank you.’ She feels bad intruding into their lives in this way, but if she leaves now, she might never get another opportunity. Abby is already trying to shut her out of her life. One day she hopes he will understand, and Abby too – providing she is innocent.
Neither of them hears Abby coming downstairs, but now she is standing there, framed in the doorway, watching them. Even though she is dressed and wearing make-up, her hair is still damp. ‘Good morning,’ she says, not looking at either of them. She heads over to Rob, kissing his cheek before turning to Sienna. ‘I hope you slept well?’
‘Thanks for all this, Abby. I don’t know what I’d do without you.’
‘You’d be fine because you always are. Remember that.’ Abby smiles at her.
It’s forced, Sienna is sure of that.
‘I’ll get going,’ Rob says, placing his cup in the dishwasher. He’s mindful of tidying up after himself, Sienna has noticed. ‘See you ladies later.’
She catches it then: the hint of confusion on Abby’s face. She throws Sienna a quick glance before following Rob out of the kitchen. Sienna doesn’t need to be in the hallway to know what’s happening out there.
‘So,’ Abby says when she comes back, ‘Rob mentioned that you’re planning on hanging around here today?’
‘I hope you don’t mind? Being at home is so… difficult at the moment.’
There’s a brief hesitation, barely discernible, before Abby answers. ‘I have a doctor’s appointment this morning, though. It’s at ten past ten. Then I promised I’d go shopping with Rob’s mum, which, knowing her, will probably take all day and most of the evening too. I wouldn’t mind you being here, but we don’t have a spare key in case you needed to go out. The front door only locks if you use the key.’ Abby is piling it on thick, throwing so many excuses at Sienna, which convinces Sienna even more that Abby doesn’t want her here.
