‘They dumped his body in that canal, Holly. I just can’t stop thinking about how he lay there for weeks. And it means any possible DNA evidence got washed away.’
‘It’s amazing what they can do these days. Don’t give up hope. We’ll know what happened to him sooner or later.’
All three of them eat their food, and while they’re clearing away, Holly turns to Sienna. ‘Jackson hasn’t eaten properly for days. This has been so good for him, thank you.’
It is good for Sienna too, having a small part of Greg here. She watches Jackson at the kitchen table, scrolling through his iPad. ‘I know this might seem strange,’ she says to Holly, ‘but if Jackson ever wanted to come over, any time, then he’s more than welcome. If it will help him to feel closer to Greg.’ His presence is everywhere, and maybe Jackson feels it as much as Sienna does.
‘You’re a good person, Sienna, thank you. I’ll let Jackson know.’
Sienna tries not to get her hopes up. Perhaps Jackson will disappear from her life, just as Greg has done, leaving no trace of her marriage. She still wants to be his stepmother, still is, as far as she’s concerned, and she needs Jackson to know this.
‘Well, we’d better get going,’ Holly is saying as she finishes loading the dishwasher.
‘Thank you for everything,’ Sienna says. ‘You and Jackson.’ She wishes she could express how much they’ve come to mean to her over the last few weeks.
Holly smiles, grabs her hand. ‘Don’t even mention it. Will you be okay this evening? What will you do?’
‘I’ll be okay. I just want to think about Greg tonight. It still feels like this day is his, even though the funeral’s over.’
‘Oh, I totally get that,’ Holly says.
Sienna doesn’t mention that there’s something else she needs to do to finally get the answers she needs.
THIRTY-TWO
Abby
Rob is packing a bag upstairs while Abby waits in the living room, watching through the window. She needs Rob to leave before Sienna gets here; there’s no way he’ll leave if he knows she’s here. He never talks about his conversations with Sienna, but it’s clear that he’s protective of her. Somehow, she has managed to creep under his skin, and it frightens Abby what she could be saying to him. She’s sure Rob doesn’t know the truth, though. There’s no way they’d still be living under this roof together if he did.
She has no idea what time Sienna will come tonight, or if she’ll actually turn up. And if she does, there is still the fear of what might happen when the two of them face each other. Alone.
She hears Rob coming downstairs, dropping his bag on the floor, calling her.
