‘Can you tell me in what way?’

‘I dunno. I tried to talk about Dad once and he just changed the subject. It’s like he didn’t want to talk about him. He kind of just cut me off.’

In light of Rob’s recent behaviour, this shouldn’t surprise her, yet it does. She always believed that Rob and Jackson were growing closer, that Rob was somehow filling the gap that Greg has left, as much as that’s possible. ‘Oh, Jackson, you should have told me.’

He shrugs. ‘It was okay. We just carried on playing our game and I forgot about it.’

She’s pleased by this; she’s heard that kids are resilient, and Jackson is definitely living proof.

‘Jackson, listen, I just need to make a quick phone call and then how about we go bowling? Would you like that?’

‘Bowling? Yeah, okay.’

She goes upstairs to call Abby, relieved when she answers the phone.

It’s difficult to start at the beginning when all she wants to do is tell Abby to lock her doors and call the police if she sees Rob. She needs to explain it from the beginning though; otherwise there’s no way Abby will understand.

‘He’s like a different person,’ Sienna says. ‘And there have been odd comments he’s made that really worry me. I know he’s feeling low about you leaving him, but I really think there’s more to it.’

‘He has been acting differently,’ Abby agrees, ‘even before I left him. He hasn’t really been the same since that night. But I don’t think he could have hurt Greg. I’ve made this mistake before, thinking Mark had something to do with it, and I don’t want to do that again.’

‘You might be right, but it’s better that the police know, isn’t it?’

There’s a moment of silence. ‘You’ve told them?’

‘Not everything. Not yet. But I told DC Roberts he might want to question Rob. I just wanted to warn you. If he turns up there, can you call the police? They’re looking for him now.’

‘Oh, Sienna, don’t you think he’s been through enough? There’s no way it was him.’

‘Why are you so sure? What aren’t you telling me?’

‘Nothing. No more secrets or lies, Sienna.’

But there are plenty more, she thinks.

FIFTY-ONE

Abby

It’s easy not to be afraid when daylight streams though the windows, yet she knows darkness falls fast, and her confidence will wane as day merges into night. How could it possibly have been Rob all along? Her head can’t wrap itself around this thought. Sienna had been convinced, though, and Abby knows only too well that when pushed, people can be capable of almost anything.
