Everything she told Abby last night was the truth; she bared her soul in order to achieve her purpose and it worked, just as she’d known it would. To get people feeling comfortable all you have to do is open up yourself, share part of you – even if you’d rather not – in order that they’ll be willing to do the same. It’s never worked with Greg, of course.
Now she knows the foundation of Abby and Rob’s marriage is fragile, and this doesn’t make her feel good. She already knows from Rob that the love in their relationship is unequal, and Abby has proved this is true. But what does it mean?
With nothing concrete to go on, she will try to be around Abby as much as possible. Secrets and lies can’t stay hidden forever and, sooner or later, if Abby is hiding something then it’s bound to appear.
Last night it was clear from Abby’s body language that she hadn’t wanted Sienna there. She’d tried her best to hide it, but she’d been on edge, too careful of what she was saying to begin with. Rob, on the other hand, had been the complete opposite: natural and accommodating. Trusting. He is Sienna’s only chance.
In the morning, Sienna gets her opportunity. She is sitting in the kitchen, listening to the sound of running water from the bathroom upstairs when Rob joins her. It’s Abby in the shower, then. She’d wanted to know who it was but hadn’t wanted to snoop around upstairs to find out. If she’s patient, then things will fall into place.
It’s a Thursday, so Rob is dressed in a suit for work. She becomes conscious that she’s wearing one of his old dressing gowns; even though Abby has given it to her, she has no idea whether or not Rob minds.
‘Ah, that old thing,’ Rob says, pointing to it. ‘Haven’t seen that for a while.’
‘Thanks for letting me stay,’ Sienna says, relieved about the dressing gown. The last thing she wants is to antagonise Rob. She points to the coffee machine. ‘It’s fresh, if you want some.’
‘Did you sleep okay?’ he asks, pouring himself a cup. ‘Actually, sorry, that’s probably a stupid question. Of course you won’t have.’
‘Actually, I slept quite well compared to the last few days. It really helps being somewhere else.’ Anywhere other than in the bed she shares with Greg.
Rob nods, takes a sip of coffee. ‘No need to thank us. Look, I feel a bit useless, like I should be doing something to help you find Greg. Is there anything at all I can do?’
