‘I told him there was no way I could do anything with him while he was seeing someone else. He said he understood, and I thought that was it. Then a week later he turned up on my doorstep telling me he’d ended his relationship.’ Abby doesn’t add that Rob’s declaration completely threw her, unsettled her. That it hadn’t been what she’d wanted; all she’d been trying to do was maintain the status quo, keep their friendship as it was.
‘And you lived happily ever after,’ Sienna says more to herself than to Abby.
A shiver runs through Abby. She should be keeping Sienna at a distance, not drawing her closer into her life. But Sienna speaking so candidly, showing such trust, has silently encouraged her to do the same. Now, though, the regret creeps in. This is exactly what Sienna wants. ‘Yes,’ she replies. ‘So far so good.’
‘Do you mind if I get some sleep now?’ Sienna says, suddenly shutting down the conversation. ‘I haven’t had much over the last few days and it’s taking its toll. Look at me, I’m a mess.’
This is so far from the truth that again Abby wonders what Sienna is doing. ‘Let me go and make up your bed,’ she says.
There is little sleep for Abby that night. The spare bedroom, where Sienna lies, is right next to hers, the two of them separated only by a thin wall. Abby replays their conversation in her mind, trying to work out what it means. Did Sienna just need an escape from worrying about Greg, or is there more to it? Abby can’t be sure, but somehow convinces herself that nothing she’s said is dangerous.
It’s an hour later, when she’s beginning to drift into sleep, that she remembers something. Her laptop is in the spare room, nestled in a pile of her clothes in the chest of drawers.
And now she can’t be sure she’s logged out of her email.
SEVENTEEN
Sienna
She’s done it. She’s an overnight guest in Abby’s house and she won’t leave until she’s found what she’s come for. Sienna has no idea that this will happen sooner than she imagines.
She still hopes she’s wrong, that Abby – a woman she’s trusted – wouldn’t lie to her, that it’s nothing but a coincidence that Greg began acting strangely so soon after he spent the night alone with Abby. She doesn’t want to believe that his disappearance is anything to do with her friend. Perhaps life has hardened Sienna, but this is preferable to being gullible, having the truth right there in front of her yet being unable to grasp it.
