He seems as reluctant to leave as she is, and they walk slowly back to the car, alone with their own thoughts.
Only a few minutes have passed since Rob dropped her home. She’s in the kitchen, staring out of the window, when the doorbell rings. He must have forgotten something. She’s pleased he’s come back; there’s something she wants to explain to him that she should have said earlier.
It’s not Rob standing in front of her, though, when she pulls open the door. DC Roberts leans forward. ‘Can I come in?’
It only takes one glance at him for her to know why he’s here. She pictures herself stepping back, slamming the door in his face.
Standing aside, she lets him in. ‘Just tell me,’ she says. Is her voice shaking? It sounds to her as though it is, even though she wants to appear calm.
‘Shall we sit down?’
‘No. No, I don’t want to sit down.’ She clutches her stomach, doubles over to ease the nausea.
DC Roberts glances through the hall. ‘I’m afraid… we’ve found a body.’ Another pause. ‘Your husband’s wallet was with it, so we have to assume it’s him. I’m so sorry, Sienna.’
DC Roberts reaches out, but he’s too late to catch her when she falls.
PART THREE
THIRTY
Abby
Sienna looks beautiful in black. This is the first thing Abby thinks when she and Rob slip into the back of the church. They’re late. She hadn’t wanted to come, it hadn’t felt appropriate, yet she’d eventually given in to Rob’s insistence. She could tell he needed to be here, even though he and Greg didn’t know each other that well. She suspects he wants to be here for Sienna. Abby has no right to take issue with that.
The minister is talking about Greg as if he knew him well, when in reality he’ll never have laid eyes on him. Everything he says will be from Sienna’s own mouth, her own thoughts, which can’t be objective. But it’s only right to only focus on the good in someone when they die. That’s what people desperately need to cling on to. Never mind the truth.
A talented surgeon and loving father and husband. She almost wants to scream out that it’s all lies.
In one of the front rows, a boy she can only assume is Jackson sits with his mother. He’s nestled into her shoulder while her arm is placed protectively around him. It’s a heartbreaking image; nobody should have to lose a parent so young, especially in the way Greg was taken. Even from the distance Abby sits, she can see Jackson’s body shudder as he cries into his mother.
