‘I just don’t know what to do. Abby denies everything, of course, and Rob will naturally want to believe his wife over me. Without Greg here, I just don’t have anything to prove it.’
Lillian’s eyes narrow. ‘Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate you telling me this, but why are you here? What is it you think I can do?’
‘I truly believe Abby knows something about Greg’s disappearance, but I can’t get the truth out of her. I just have to hope the police can find him. I’m here so that you’re aware, and maybe you might have more success convincing Rob that Abby can’t be trusted. He won’t listen to me. They just think Greg’s left me.’
‘Hmm. And you’re sure he hasn’t? Sorry, but I have to ask.’
‘I can’t be sure of anything; I only know what Greg told me before he left. And that Rob deserves better than this. He deserves the truth.’
Lillian takes a small sip of water, ponders Sienna’s words. ‘Well, there’s little chance of him listening to me. He’s a grown man and makes his own mind up about things. But I can try and work on him.’ And then she smiles. ‘Actually, I’ll have the perfect opportunity to do this. He’s coming away with us on Monday to a friend’s villa in Portugal. They were both invited, but Rob texted this morning to say Abby won’t be coming. I’m not losing any sleep over that.’
Sienna stores this information away; it is bound to be useful. She’ll do whatever leads her to Greg. ‘Well, I’ll leave that to you, I just wanted you to know.’ She stands. The longer she stays here, the more chance her story will come crashing down.
They make their way back through the house. ‘Let me give you my number,’ Lillian says. ‘And I’ll take yours. I hope you find your husband.’
Sienna walks to her car, relieved that this appeared to go well. She feels sorry for Abby as she drives away, and recalls the times they’ve laughed together, shared moments that have filled Sienna with happiness.
Then she pictures Greg and Abby together, her hands all over him, and she is blinded by rage. And fear.
TWENTY-TWO
Abby
The weekend passes uneventfully, a lull in the tension she’s felt over the last couple of weeks, even though it’s still there, underlying all she does. Once again Sienna didn’t answer when she and Rob went to her house on Saturday, her car still missing from the driveway. For Abby this was a relief.
Abby would be worried about Sienna if the neighbour hadn’t seen them knocking and rushed over to tell them he’d just seen Sienna drive off. She was okay, then.
